Technolory・Abel Black®

Abel Black® is our proprietary technology that turns stainless steel deep black at the nano-scale—durable, permanent, and peel-free

Applications

Applications of Abel Black®

Abel Black® is the world’s only technology that permanently transforms stainless steel into deep black by forming a thin oxide film through controlled electrochemical processing. The color arises from light interference within the film—not from pigment or plating—so it will never peel or fade, preserving the metal’s natural texture and integrity.

Key Features

Abel Black® is defined not only by its deep black finish but also by its broad range of functional qualities and proven performance across industries

At Abel, we believe beauty is not something you add on, but something you reveal. Abel Black® reflects this philosophy by drawing out the natural metallic character of stainless steel without applying paint, achieving a rich black tone.

The oxide film’s growth imparts heat resistance, weather resistance, and strong corrosion resistance, expanding design possibilities. This is not just a surface finish — it’s a technology delivering reliable, enduring value.

01
Black Coloration by Oxide Film

Abel Black® forms an ultra-thin oxide film that reveals the metal’s natural texture. Its deep black tone is created through light interference—not coating—preserving the true character of stainless steel

02
Formability, Workability, and Efficiency

The ultra-thin oxide film maintains dimensional accuracy and resists peeling during progressive pressing, multi-step forming, insert molding, roll forming, and roll-to-roll processing. This simplifies manufacturing steps and reduces costs.

03
Corrosion and Weather Resistance

Proven to withstand 500 hours of salt spray testing and 1,000 hours of weathering tests. Demonstrates approximately 30 times greater resistance to ferric chloride corrosion than untreated stainless steel. It offers high durability against abrasion and outdoor exposure.

04
Anti-Reflective Properties

Reduces reflectance across the visible light spectrum, absorbing up to 99% of light. Enhances optical precision and glare reduction.

05
High Emissivity

Improves radiative performance for applications involving heat retention and thermal management.

The outstanding qualities of Abel Black® add value beyond the inherent performance of stainless steel

Cost Reduction

Since the color is formed during shaping rather than applied afterward, it is more cost-effective than post-treatment coloring.

Process Simplification

No need for additional surface treatment after forming, whether in-house or outsourced, reducing manufacturing steps.

Maintained Processing Precision

The ultra-thin film preserves the accuracy achieved through specialized press forming techniques.

Compliance with Environmental and Industry Standards

Meets RoHS and REACH regulations (free from lead, mercury, cadmium, and hexavalent chromium).

Holds ISO 9001 certification for surface treatment design and processing.

Formability, Workability, and Efficiency

Abel Black® adapts smoothly to complex forming processes

It supports progressive stamping, multi-stage and insert molding, roll forming, and roll-to-roll processing.

Even with sharp 90° bends, the deep black finish remains intact without peeling or whitening.

Abel Black® can be applied after etching, and laser marking on Abel Black® materials is also possible. Its excellent corrosion and weather resistance ensure the finish won’t peel, making it suitable for outdoor use in all conditions.

Additionally, the process can be applied to stainless steel mesh, preserving its flexibility and breathability.

From reliable structural applications to creative expressions, Abel Black® adapts with ease.

Beyond our standard finish, we also offer fully custom polishing treatments. Its deep black finish is highly regarded for upscale interior and exterior architectural elements, as well as exterior components of consumer electronics like AV equipment.

LM-S1 Mirror finish
